So, David Brooks used to think (https://lnkd.in/gEZBXyby) that schools need to put content knowledge acquisition in first position: “the cathedrals of knowledge and wisdom are based on the foundations of factual acquisition and cultural literacy. You can’t overleap that, which is what High Tech High is in danger of doing.”
Now he thinks (https://lnkd.in/gYSryvmg) that this view of education is problematic: “At [the] project-based-learning school, High Tech High in San Diego… the students get an education in what it feels like to be fully engaged in a project with others. Their school days are not consumed with preparing for standardized tests or getting lectured at, so their curiosity is enlarged, not extinguished.”
Some people might point out that if you write one thing publicly and then later write the opposite, you ought to acknowledge the change in your viewpoint. Some people might point that out, but not me, because I’m bigger than that. As fellow proponents of the development of non-cognitive skills, I will demonstrate "emotional flexibility, social agility, and moral qualities" by welcoming you into the fold, David.
